I promised to read this after I finished my exams, and I am glad I did. It took me a couple of days, but that somehow made it better. I found myself thinking about this fic throughout the day, and that in itself says something. It is rare that something is able to capture my imagination the way this did .
I like the idea of multiple lives, and I found it interesting in this story how the lives overlapped, and thus how your stories overlapped. Each part of this fic was fleshed out beautifully, making it powerful on its own, and even more powerful combined with the other parts. And I liked the little things -- lines here and there that gave more insight as to what was going on. Your writing style was perfect for this. And I loved the concept of the good, good heart, the reoccurring imagery and use of water and drowning and sea salt, and how these concepts crept into your writing in all of the parts.
I also liked the minor characters. Shige, especially. I adored him in the first part, and it made me happy that he returned again and again. His use in the last part was beautiful. Having him return to his life with Koyama was sweet. I wasn't expecting it, and that only made it better. And Ryo was an interesting character, since he was able to interact with and navigate through multiple lives. His line in part four -- “I've got this cough, see,” he says, to himself. “Watery, fucking cough. What does that mean?” -- was particularly haunting.
My favorite parts of this fic are the "flashes" -- the moments where Yamapi and Jin become aware of themselves, and how they, quite literally, transcend time and space. Each of these moments gave me goosebumps.
I wasn't expecting the ending. I thought it would jump back to the future to end it there. I didn't think that there would be a flash through time that would set everything right. After I read the last line, I found myself crying. Not because I was sad, but because, for the first time in a long time, I felt truly moved.
This is one of the best fics -- the greatest stories -- I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The plot, the characters, the pacing, the writing -- everything is wonderful, touching, and powerful. Thank you so much for sharing this story. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. ♥
